Gary Robert Cooper, a man accused of killing two people on a motorcycle in April 2016, has pleaded guilty. Cooper entered a guilty plea Monday and was sentenced on two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and driving while license suspended. Cooper crossed the center line on Dawnville Road in Dalton Sunday, April 17, 2016 and struck and killed Wanda Faye and Wesley Lynn Cummings. Mr. & Mrs. Cummings were heading home from Church and were killed instantly. Cooper will serve 15 years in prison followed by 15 years on probation including fines, community service work and alcohol and substance abuse counseling. He will not be allowed to drive or be in control of any moving vehicle during his sentence. Cooper had four prior DUI’s from 1984 - 1999 and two prior felony traffic violations during the same time. After the crash, Cooper told police that he was trying to light a cigarette when he crossed the center-line. Police say he smelled of alcohol and blood testing revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.092 and the presence of clonazepam in his system. (WTVC Channel 9)
