The victim in Wednesday's shooting is now sitting in the Chattooga County Jail for robbery and drug charges, according to jail reports. Justin Clay Carroll, 22, of Trion, was shot in the chest while inside a residence on Mill Village Road in Lyerly around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. The motive for the shooting is still a mystery because Carroll and a witness inside the house aren't talking much, according to sheriff officials. Carroll was transported to the hospital and treated. Now Carroll is having a different set of problems. He was jailed for robbery and drug related charges this morning. Sheriff Mark Schrader said the shooting and the robbery are two separate incidents.
"It's totally unrelated to the shooting case we currently are working on," Sheriff Schrader said.
The robbery allegedly happened on Dec. 22 in the parking lot at Mount Vernon Mills in Trion. Carroll is accused of robbing David Wade near the mill's dock off Fourth Street. After talking with Wade and investigating the case, Inv. Goins applied for warrants against Carroll. Deputies did not immediately arrest Carroll after the shooting but allowed him to be treated for his gunshot wound. However, Deputy Marvin Armstrong spotted Carroll around 3:30 a.m. Friday at the Exxon gas station (Formerly Kangaroo on the north end of Summerville). While picking up Carroll on the robbery and battery warrants, a meth pipe was allegedly found, Sheriff Schrader said. "Subject did have in his possession a clear glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine," Deputy Marvin Armstrong reported.
Now Carroll is charged with robbery, battery, possession of meth and possession or use of drug related objects, according to jail reports.
