The Gordon County Sheriff's Department says a man from Rome Georgia is in custody after committing vandalism, and later leading Gordon County authorities including the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) on a100 MPH high-speed chase. Authorities say the incident happened just after 9:00 a.m. at the County Transportation Department building on Fairmount Highway near Calhoun. Deputies were called to a report of a man breaking into and damaging the facility. While deputies were there, they got another call that the man responsible had just been seen at a convenience store in
Sonoraville. Several Deputies along with GSP troopers headed that way. When they got there, authorities say the man took off in his pickup truck at a high rate of speed. Authorities say a a deputy barley avoided being hit head on by the driver at high speeds as the pursuit continued west on the Fairmount Highway. State troopers attempted to PIT the vehicle multiple times before forcing the pickup from the roadway at Blackwood Road. Authorities say the driver tried to resist arrest but was quickly subdued and taken into custody at about 9:20 a.m. a taser was deployed without further incident. Sheriff’s detectives said the damage at the County Transportation Department building as extensive. The building itself as well as a county vehicle was vandalized. Physical evidence at the scene indicated that a vehicle was driven through a large bay door, and it appeared someone tried to light a county-owned truck on fire. Authorities identify the suspect as 36-year-old David Ray Jasman of Rome. A post on the Gordon County Sheriff's Office website says, "It is not known at this point in the investigation if Jasman has any connection to our community, or why he chose to burglarize and damage the county facility. He is being held in custody and will face a litany of charges regarding burglary, damaging and destroying government-owned property, as well as fleeing from and assaulting peace officers."
